Fans of The Simpsons Movie can finally rejoice. Disney and 20th Century Studios have confirmed that a sequel will arrive in cinemas on 23 July 2027. The announcement comes exactly 20 years after the release of the original film.
The new project is based on the long-running animated sitcom, The Simpsons, which follows the lives of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. While the sequel’s title has not been revealed yet, the official poster has already sparked excitement online. The artwork shows a doughnut being grabbed, paired with the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
Fans quickly shared their enthusiasm on social media. Many posted creative memes inspired by the show’s famous opening sequence. One viral edit featured Bart Simpson writing on a chalkboard: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”
The original The Simpsons Movie was released in 2007 and directed by David Silverman. It featured a storyline where Homer polluted Springfield’s water supply, forcing the town into crisis under a giant glass dome. The film became a global success, earning an estimated $536 million at the box office.
Rumors of a sequel had circulated for years, but no official details were given until now. Showrunner Matt Selman recently told Variety that the series continues to thrive thanks to streaming platforms. He explained that fans can now watch episodes at any time, helping the show stay relevant for both new and old viewers.
Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons first appeared as short cartoons in 1987. The series has since run for 37 seasons and was recently renewed through season 40, scheduled to air in 2028 and 2029.
With the confirmation of a sequel, fans will see Springfield’s most famous family return to the big screen. After two decades of waiting, The Simpsons Movie is making its long-awaited comeback.
