ICC Addresses DRS Controversy in Pakistan vs. South Africa World Cup Match

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a clarification regarding the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) incident during the 2023 World Cup match between Pakistan and South Africa, describing it as an “erroneous display of graphics.”

In the match, South African batter Rassie van der Dussen reviewed an lbw decision after being given out by the on-field umpire. Initially, the ball tracking displayed that the impact was “umpire’s call” and the wickets were “missing.” This graphic was then replaced by a new ball tracking showing “umpire’s call” for both impact and wickets.

An ICC spokesperson stated, “In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen. The completed graphic with the correct details was eventually displayed.”

It should be noted that another controversial decision later in the game favored South Africa and impacted the outcome of the match. In the 46th over, with South Africa needing 8 runs to win, a delivery by Haris Rauf struck Tabraiz Shamsi on the front foot, with a gap between the bat and the pad. The on-field umpire gave a not-out decision, and Pakistan opted for a DRS referral.

The ball tracking system indicated that the impact was in line with the stumps, even though the ball had pitched outside off and just grazed the leg stump. As a result, the on-field umpire’s decision was upheld, allowing the batter to survive and contributing to South Africa’s victory in the match.
