Kohli Retires From T20Is after World Cup Victory

Virat Kohli, former Indian cricket captain and Player of the Match in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, announced his retirement from T20Is following India’s historic win over South Africa in Barbados. Kohli, one of India’s greatest cricketers, expressed that it was time for the next generation to take over. Rising from Delhi’s streets to world cricket stardom, his T20I career had many highs and lows as captain.

“This was my last T20 World Cup, and it’s exactly what we wanted to achieve,” Kohli said after India ended an 11-year ICC title drought. He described it as a perfect culmination and confirmed his retirement regardless of the outcome, emphasizing the need for the new generation to advance T20 cricket.

Reflecting on the victory, Kohli highlighted the long wait for an ICC tournament win, particularly noting Rohit Sharma’s nine T20 World Cup participations. Kohli’s T20I journey began in 2010, culminating in a record-breaking final performance with 76 off 59 balls, helping India post 176/7.

Kohli ended his illustrious career with 4,188 runs in 125 matches, averaging 48.69.
