Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has announced his decision to leave Mumbai and relocate to South India, expressing frustration with Bollywood’s growing focus on profit and stardom over creativity.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap criticised the Hindi film industry for prioritising financial success and star culture, which he claims has stifled artistic integrity. He lamented the industry’s obsession with blockbusters and remakes, leaving little room for experimentation.

Kashyap highlighted his admiration for Malayalam cinema, praising its bold and original storytelling. โMalayalam filmmakers are doing what we used to do,โ he said, emphasising their ability to localise global influences while maintaining creative freedom.
This move marks a significant shift for Kashyap, known for his groundbreaking films like Gangs of Wasseypur. He expressed a desire to thrive in an environment that values creativity over commercial pressures, stating, โI need an environment where creativity can thrive.โ
