Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial artwork Comedian, featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall, is returning to auction. Sotheby’s estimates the bids to range between $1 million and $1.5 million.
Originally displayed at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019 with a price tag of $120,000, the piece gained global attention for its unconventional approach, stirring debate among art critics and the public alike.

The auction package includes a fresh banana, duct tape, a certificate of authenticity, and installation instructions. According to Sotheby’s, the materials are replaced with each new installation, following Cattelan’s guidelines.
Some view the artwork as a homage to conceptual artists like Marcel Duchamp, whose works questioned the boundaries of art.
