Disney has released the official trailer for the return of The Muppet Show, reviving the beloved franchise nearly 50 years after its original debut. The new special is set to premiere on February 4, airing on ABC and streaming globally on Disney+.
The event will bring back Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and the full Muppet ensemble to the original Muppet Theatre for a musical-comedy performance. Pop star Sabrina Carpenter will be the primary guest, with Maya Rudolph also appearing. Seth Rogen is attached as both an executive producer and guest star.
Created by Jim Henson, The Muppet Show originally aired from 1976 to 1981. It became one of the most internationally successful television programs, running in over 100 countries. The original series featured top guest stars, including Elton John, Diana Ross, Johnny Cash, and Liza Minnelli. The show won multiple awards, including Emmys, a Grammy, a Peabody, and a BAFTA.
The revival is directed by Alex Timbers and produced by 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio, and Point Grey Pictures. Executive producers include Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and longtime Muppet collaborators. Veteran performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, and Matt Vogel will reprise their iconic roles, continuing the legacy of The Muppet Show.
The special coincides with the approaching 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show in 2026. All five seasons of the original series are currently available on Disney+. The new special will stream on Disney+ at 12:00 am PST / 3:00 am EST, followed by a primetime broadcast on ABC at 9:00 pm EST/PST.
During its original UK run from September 5, 1976, to May 23, 1981, The Muppet Show aired five seasons totaling 120 episodes. The original cast included Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz, Fran Brill, and many others. Some performers also worked on Sesame Street, whose characters occasionally appeared on The Muppet Show.
The revival of The Muppet Show is expected to delight longtime fans and introduce the Muppets to a new generation worldwide.
