Fawad Khan’s much-anticipated Bollywood comeback has suffered a serious blow as his film Abir Gulaal has been banned in both India and Pakistan, a rare occurrence reflecting deepening political friction.
The film, also starring Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, first faced a ban in India due to Fawad’s Pakistani nationality. Following the Pahalgam attack on April 22, Pakistan responded by banning the film as well, citing its sensitive timing and Kapoor’s involvement.

Veteran distributor Satish Anand confirmed that the decision was made in light of increasing cross-border tensions and could result in major financial losses for the filmmakers.
The dual ban highlights how cultural exchange is increasingly vulnerable to political fallout, with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and reinstating a ban on Pakistani artists.
Fawad Khan, who was set to make a high-profile return to Indian cinema after years of absence, now faces an uncertain future, as Abir Gulaal becomes a casualty of escalating regional hostilities.
