Female chefs call out gender bias in UK restaurants

Dozens of female chefs in the UK have condemned the “pervasive” sexism in restaurant kitchens, calling for more women in leadership roles. Their open letter, signed by around 70 women, was published in response to Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton’s claim that he had “not seen” sexism in the industry.

The letter criticized the “systematically flawed” restaurant culture and the “pitiful representation of women” at the recent Michelin Guide UK awards. It highlighted inappropriate behaviors and unequal advancement opportunities, noting that only two women had received Michelin stars in the last four years.

The Michelin Guide acknowledged gender stereotypes in the industry but maintained that chef selection is based on merit alone.
