Artificial intelligence entered the spotlight this weekend with the debut of Tilly Norwood, the world’s first AI actress, at the Zurich Film Festival.
Her introduction immediately set off a wave of controversy in Hollywood. Reports suggested that talent agents were already considering representing the digital performer, raising concerns across the acting community.
Creator Defends Project
Eline Van der Velden, the actress and producer who created Norwood, responded to the criticism on Instagram. She described the project as a creative experiment, not a threat to real actors.
“Norwood is not a replacement for a human being, but a piece of art,” she wrote. Van der Velden compared artificial intelligence to tools like CGI, animation, or puppetry. She emphasized that none of these technologies ever removed the need for live performance.

Norwood is the first project from Xicoia, a new AI talent studio launched from Van der Velden’s company Particle6. Planning began in February, with early doubts giving way to curiosity by May.

Actors quickly voiced their anger. Melissa Barrera urged performers to drop any agent who signs Norwood, calling the move “gross.” Kiersey Clemons demanded transparency from agencies considering the AI star, while Mara Wilson criticized the use of women’s faces as visual references.

Despite the uproar, Van der Velden stands by her vision. She hopes Norwood will one day reach the same status as stars like Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman.
