Bollywood actor Imran Khan has received interim relief from the Bombay High Court in a case involving an order to leave India. The court has suspended the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) notice until November 2.
According to Bollywood Hungama, the court issued the order after the Central government requested additional time to respond to the actor’s petition. The government’s lawyer also assured the court that authorities would not take coercive action against him before the next hearing.
The development provides temporary relief to the actor as his legal challenge continues. The matter concerns his immigration status and the possibility of deportation from India.
Imran Khan Challenges FRRO Notice
Imran Khan approached the Bombay High Court to challenge a notice issued on October 14. The notice reportedly directed him to leave India and raised concerns about his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
Through his petition, the actor sought protection against deportation and other actions affecting his legal status. He also questioned the process followed by the authorities before issuing the notice.
According to the petition, Imran alleged that officials issued the notice without giving him an opportunity to present his side. He further claimed that political pressure influenced the decision.
These allegations form part of his legal challenge. The court proceedings will determine how the matter moves forward.
Notice Followed Reported Detention During Protests
The FRRO notice reportedly came after Imran Khan’s brief detention during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The incident was followed by administrative action concerning the actor’s right to remain in India. However, the actor has challenged the notice through the legal system.
The FRRO also issued a separate show cause notice regarding the possible cancellation of his OCI status. A show cause notice generally asks a person to explain why a proposed action should not be taken.
The two notices have placed Imran’s immigration status at the centre of the dispute. His petition seeks protection while the court considers the issues raised.
Next Hearing Scheduled for November 2
The Bombay High Court has scheduled the next hearing for November 2 at 3 pm. The Central government is expected to respond to the actor’s petition during the proceedings.
Until then, the interim order prevents the challenged notice from taking effect as directed. The government’s counsel has also assured the court that no coercive action will be taken before the next hearing.
The next proceedings are expected to provide further clarity on the case. The court will consider the arguments presented by both sides.
