Komal Meer Speaks Out on 'Me Too' Misuse in Pakistan Ahead of New Drama ‘Gonj’

Actress Komal Meer has raised serious concerns over the misuse of the ‘Me Too’ movement in Pakistan. Speaking at a promotional event for her new drama Gonj, the actress stressed the need to understand workplace harassment and the legal protections available for women.

Komal Meer shared that while the global ‘Me Too’ campaign gave many women a voice, in Pakistan, it was unfortunately exploited by some for personal benefit. “This not only harmed the credibility of the movement but also silenced the real survivors,” she said.

Her upcoming drama Gonj revolves around the challenges faced by women in professional settings. The story includes themes of verbal abuse, harassment, and the fight for justice. According to Komal Meer, her character in the show takes legal action after facing harassment, offering a strong message of empowerment.

“This role helped me understand the importance of knowing one’s rights,” said Komal Meer. She emphasized that many women in Pakistan are unaware of workplace harassment laws and often remain silent due to fear or shame. The drama, she hopes, will educate and inspire viewers to stand up for themselves.

Komal also added that dramas like Gonj are more than entertainment—they are tools for raising awareness. “We want to open dialogue and encourage women to speak up, not just for themselves but for others too,” she noted.

Set to premiere later this month, Gonj aims to highlight the social and legal dimensions of harassment at work. Its creators hope it sparks real conversations and supports real change.

While the ‘Me Too’ movement has had mixed responses in Pakistan, Komal Meer believes it is time to focus on genuine voices and legal support to address workplace abuse effectively.
