Rs5 Million Damages Verdict Against Meesha Shafi Is Conditionally Suspended by LHC

The Lahore High Court has conditionally suspended a trial court verdict against Meesha Shafi in a defamation case filed by Ali Zafar. The earlier ruling had ordered Meesha Shafi to pay Rs5 million in damages.

The case was heard by Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad. During the hearing, counsel for Meesha Shafi, Advocate Saqib Jillani, presented arguments in support of the appeal. The court, however, did not grant a full suspension of the verdict.

In its observations, the court stated that certain parts of the trial court’s decision would remain in effect. It specifically upheld the restriction on repeating allegations of sexual harassment against Ali Zafar. The judge noted that such claims cannot be allowed to be made without proper grounds.

According to the appeal, Meesha Shafi challenged the sessions court decision that ruled in favor of Ali Zafar. The trial court had accepted his claim and directed her to pay damages. This order was contested in the high court.

The Lahore High Court provided partial relief in the matter. It ordered Meesha Shafi to deposit half of the Rs5 million penalty with the court. In addition, she must submit a surety bond for the remaining amount.

The court also issued a notice to Ali Zafar, seeking his response on the appeal. Further proceedings will take place after both sides present their arguments.

Legal experts say the decision reflects a balanced approach. It offers temporary relief while maintaining key conditions of the original ruling. The case continues to attract public attention due to the profiles of those involved.

Earlier, the sessions court had ruled fully in favor of Ali Zafar. It concluded that the allegations made by Meesha Shafi caused reputational damage. As a result, damages were awarded to the singer.
