Veteran actress Maria Wasti has finally broken her silence regarding her extended break from the entertainment scene, revealing that she’s simply waiting for a script that truly excites her. In a recent appearance on a private comedy talk show, Wasti — widely admired for her memorable performances since the 1990s — spoke openly about her artistic choices, current hiatus, and the state of the drama industry today.
“There’s no dramatic reason behind my absence,” Wasti clarified. “I just haven’t come across a role that feels fresh, creative, and genuinely challenging. When something truly moves me, I’ll return to acting.”

While she still receives offers, Wasti admitted the content lacks originality. She voiced her disappointment in the current television trends, pointing out how characters are often one-dimensional and stories are repetitive. “We’re not seeing layered, realistic portrayals anymore,” she said. “The same plots keep surfacing with little innovation.”
Reminiscing about her early days on Pakistan Television (PTV), she expressed fondness for those projects, noting how emotionally immersive and well-crafted the roles were. “I would completely become the character,” she recalled with nostalgia.
Wasti, known for her emotive and nuanced acting, also touched upon the subject of love, calling it a “selfish emotion” that has the power to change a person in profound ways.
Sharing a lighthearted yet eerie fan encounter, Wasti recalled a moment when a man followed her home. “I sensed something wasn’t right, so I used my acting chops to politely send him away by pretending to welcome him back another time,” she said with a laugh.
Her reflections have resonated with audiences and insiders alike, especially at a time when demands for more thoughtful, original storytelling in Pakistani television are gaining momentum.
