Minecraft Movie Crafts Massive Box Office Debut in 2025

In a blockbuster start to the year, A Minecraft Movie has mined over $100 million in its U.S. opening weekend, making it the biggest box office debut of 2025 so far. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures adaptation is playing in over 4,200 theaters and has smashed records previously held by Captain America: Brave New World and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

The film raked in $10.55 million from Thursday previews alone, edging out Freddy’s previous video game adaptation record. By Friday afternoon, ticket sales had already hit the $50 million mark, with global projections aiming for a $150 million debut—matching its production budget.

Directed by Jared Hess, the film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks. The story follows four teens mysteriously transported into Minecraft’s pixelated Overworld, where they must survive and craft their way back to reality.

Though critics have given the film mixed reviews—currently holding a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes—audiences are loving it. Positive word of mouth and a Gen Z–driven social media campaign have fueled the movie’s momentum, with over 772 million online interactions logged.
