Mumbai Comedy Club Attacked Over Kunal Kamra’s Satire

Mumbai

A comedy club in Mumbai was ransacked after comedian Kunal Kamra mocked Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a performance. The attack has sparked concerns over freedom of expression in India.

Kamra performed a parody song at The Habitat, calling Shinde a “traitor” for his 2022 political defection. Shortly after, supporters from Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction stormed the venue, vandalizing property. Videos showed men smashing furniture and tearing down decorations as police launched an investigation into at least 20 suspects.

The Habitat has since announced an indefinite closure, citing safety concerns. Meanwhile, a defamation complaint was filed against Kamra, with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis stating that “insulting leaders cannot be tolerated.” Shiv Sena MLA Naresh Mhaske even warned Kamra that he might be forced to leave India.

Kamra, known for his outspoken political satire, responded by posting a photo of the Indian Constitution, hinting at his commitment to free speech. The incident has reignited debate over artistic freedom and political intolerance in India.
