Renowned Indian actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to the authorities at Tihar Jail in Delhi on Thursday. This follows the Delhi High Courtโs refusal to grant him any relief in his long-pending cheque bounce cases.
According to a jail source, Yadav appeared before the jail officials at 4 pm. โNow the jail authorities will follow the standard operating procedure,โ the source added.
Earlier, the actor had requested an extension to arrange repayment of โน50 lakh. However, the Delhi High Court rejected this plea on Wednesday. The court stated, โLeniency, though sometimes necessary, cannot be extended endlessly, especially when it is met with continued non-compliance.โ
The case dates back to a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. against Rajpal Yadav and his wife. The complaint concerned multiple bounced cheques and unpaid dues. In 2018, a magisterial court in Delhi convicted the couple and sentenced Yadav to six months in prison. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019, after which the couple appealed to the Delhi High Court.
In June 2024, the high court temporarily suspended the conviction. It urged Yadav to make โsincere and genuine measuresโ to settle the matter with the complainant. Despite this, repeated failures to honor the repayment led the court to issue a final directive. The actor was ordered to surrender by February 2, 2026.
Legal experts say the case highlights the judiciaryโs strict stance on financial obligations, regardless of a personโs public profile. The court emphasized that no individual, including prominent figures like Rajpal Yadav, is entitled to indefinite leniency.
As of Thursday evening, Yadav remains in custody at Tihar Jail. His legal team has yet to announce further steps regarding the repayment or possible appeals.
This case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of cheque bounce cases in India. Authorities and courts continue to maintain strict enforcement to ensure compliance and uphold the law.
