In a candid discussion on Ayesha Omar’s show Speak Easy, renowned actor Sarwat Gilani revealed her painful struggle with postpartum depression, shedding light on the often-hidden realities many new mothers face. While social media often paints an idealized picture of motherhood with images of serene newborns and blissful moments, Sarwat highlighted the harsh contrast of her own experience. “Postpartum depression is crazy,” the Churails star shared. “I didn’t even want to look at my daughter for a while. But Allah gets you through this, and Allah also gets you out of this.”

Sarwat described the depths of her struggle, admitting that she even had thoughts of ending her life at one point, despite having a loving and supportive husband by her side. She expressed how isolating the experience felt. “My husband felt helpless,” she explained. “He was there on the surface, but inside, I was so alone.” Her words underscore the broader issue that depression, whether postpartum or related to other aspects of life, can manifest in deep emotional isolation and pain, making it essential to seek professional help.

Now in a healthier place, Sarwat offered advice on maintaining mental health and relationships, especially within the context of marriage. She emphasized the importance of setting boundaries, both with one’s spouse and in-laws, and encouraged women to have realistic expectations, particularly when financial pressures are involved. “If your husband is shouldering the financial burden, be understanding,” she advised. “Don’t be materialistically demanding.”

Sarwat concluded with tips for a harmonious relationship, advocating for resolving conflicts before the day’s end and continuously supporting each other’s personal growth. “Celebrate each other,” she urged. “Accept them and appreciate them, and help them go places.” Her vulnerability and wisdom serve as a powerful reminder of the complexities of mental health and the importance of empathy and mutual support in relationships.
