Satya Theatre Revives Sindhi Storytelling With Amar Kahani

Theatre

Sindhi theatre is witnessing a revival as Satya Theatre introduces a fresh approach with its latest performance, Amar Kahani. Directed by Tariq Raja, the play features three short stories by renowned Sindhi writer Amar Jaleel, performed by Raja, Farrukh Aslam, and Umair Bhutto. The minimalist production eliminates costumes, sets, and music, focusing solely on the actors’ performances.

Amar Kahani follows the concept of “poor theatre,” inspired by Jerzy Grotowski, allowing performances to be staged anywhere without logistical constraints. The selected stories—Mitti ja Marhun, Tareekh jo Qaffan, and Pul-e-Sirat—highlight deep-rooted societal issues in Sindh. Raja believes these narratives remain relevant today, reflecting the unchanged struggles of the region over decades.

Since its debut in December 2021, Amar Kahani has been performed across major Sindhi cities, including Hyderabad, Karachi, and Larkana. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with audiences emotionally connecting to the raw storytelling. Senior artists and theatre enthusiasts have shown immense support, recognizing the effort to elevate Sindhi theatre without the need for grand productions.

Satya Theatre aims to expand its movement by taking performances to more audiences and training the youth in theatre. The group also plans to translate key theatre books and scripts into Sindhi for broader accessibility. With a growing interest in Sindhi arts and culture, Raja remains optimistic about the future, believing that a new wave of artistic expression is on the rise.
