Algerian boxing star and Olympic gold medallist Imane Khelif is once again in the spotlight after a leaked medical report allegedly identified her as biologically male. The report, said to be from a certified Indian lab, has reignited global debate over gender eligibility in women’s sports.
The controversy comes just days after World Boxing ordered Khelif to undergo genetic testing in accordance with new eligibility standards introduced in May 2025. Until these tests are completed, she has been barred from competing, including in upcoming events like the Eindhoven Box Cup.

Khelif had previously been disqualified in 2023 by the now-defunct IBA over a failed gender test, yet went on to win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Questions over those earlier test results were even raised by then-IOC president Thomas Bach.
Reactions to the leaked findings have been explosive. Figures like Piers Morgan, Sharron Davies, and Riley Gaines voiced support for tighter controls in women’s sports, calling the situation unfair. Khelif, however, has denied all claims and insists on defending her title at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
As pressure mounts, World Boxing remains firm on its updated policies to ensure safety and fairness in combat sports, stating that unresolved gender eligibility cases will result in ineligibility.
