Maulana Tariq Jamil has recalled a deeply personal conversation with late singer Junaid Jamshed, saying the celebrated pop star once admitted that fame and professional success had failed to give him the fulfilment he expected.
Speaking during a podcast with Dr Muhammad Affan Qaiser, Tariq Jamil reflected on his early interactions with Junaid and the spiritual journey that eventually became a defining part of the singer’s life.
Junaid was already one of Pakistan’s most recognizable music stars when the two met. From the outside, Tariq Jamil recalled, the singer appeared to possess the success and popularity many people dreamed of achieving.
His private feelings, however, were very different.
Junaid Jamshed Opened Up About Feeling Empty
According to Tariq Jamil, Junaid told him during their first conversation that despite achieving glamour and success, he felt empty and lacked direction.
The scholar recalled Junaid comparing his situation to a boat that had no destination.
Tariq Jamil said he responded by telling the singer that he was looking for peace in the wrong place and encouraged him to explore faith as a source of fulfilment.
Using an analogy about medicine, he explained that a person takes medicine in order to recover rather than waiting to recover before taking it.
A Turning Point in Junaid Jamshed’s Life
Tariq Jamil recalled that Junaid eventually joined the Tabligh movement in 2002 and experienced a strong sense of peace during his first journey.
The transition marked a dramatic change in the public life of a man who had achieved enormous recognition through music.
Tariq Jamil described himself as a means through which Allah guided Junaid while emphasizing the personal nature of the singer’s transformation.
Tariq Jamil Recalls a Lighter Memory
The scholar also shared a lighter memory involving Junaid during a trip to Makkah.
According to Tariq Jamil, Junaid sang a new naat melody before he pointed out that the tune resembled an old Bollywood song. Junaid reportedly responded humorously, saying Tariq Jamil was the first person to notice the similarity.
The anecdote offered a more personal glimpse into their relationship beyond Junaid’s widely discussed spiritual journey.

From Pop Stardom to Religious Work
Junaid Jamshed later became widely recognized for naats and religious work after his years as one of Pakistan’s best-known pop singers.
He died in 2016 in the PIA plane crash near Abbottabad.
