ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has dismissed rumours about another ban on TikTok, confirming that no official decision has been taken to block the popular video-sharing application in the country.

The clarification came after a notification claiming that TikTok would soon face restrictions began circulating across social media platforms.

Responding to the rumours, the telecom regulator said the circulating notification was fake and had not been issued by the authority.

PTA also advised internet users to avoid sharing unverified information and check official channels before believing announcements about restrictions on digital platforms.

The clarification has brought relief to Pakistani TikTok users, content creators and businesses that rely on the application to reach their audiences.

The latest development has also renewed discussions about the platform’s previous restrictions and its content moderation policies in Pakistan.

TikTok has faced temporary bans in the country in the past. In October 2020, authorities blocked the application over concerns about objectionable content. The restriction was lifted around 10 days later after the company provided assurances about improving its content moderation system.

Since then, the platform has continued operating in Pakistan despite periodic concerns about online content and regulatory compliance.

Meanwhile, TikTok’s latest enforcement figures indicate that millions of videos have been removed from its Pakistani platform.

According to the company’s Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for April to June 2025, approximately 25.44 million videos were taken down in Pakistan for violating its content policies.

The report stated that 99.7 per cent of the removed videos were detected proactively, while 96.2 per cent were taken down within 24 hours of being uploaded.

During the January to March 2025 period, TikTok had removed approximately 24.95 million videos in Pakistan.

The figures highlight the scale of content moderation carried out by the platform to address violations of its community guidelines.

PTA has urged citizens to remain careful about misleading notifications and announcements shared through social media.

The regulator has encouraged users to rely on its verified social media accounts and official website for authentic updates about telecommunications and digital services.
