TikTok India Comeback? Official Statement Reveals Truth

TikTok India Comeback? Official Statement Reveals Truth

TikTok has denied reports suggesting its return to India after users briefly noticed the platform’s website becoming accessible without a VPN. The short-video app clarified that it remains banned in the country and continues to follow government rules.

In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson said the company has not restored access to its services in India. “We continue to comply with the Government of India’s directive,” the spokesperson added.

The clarification came after local media outlets reported that TikTok’s website was loading normally for some users. This triggered speculation on social media about a possible comeback. However, officials confirmed that the government has not revoked the ban.

A senior IT Ministry official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the ban imposed in June 2020 remains in place. The order was issued under Section 69A of the IT Act.

Industry sources explained that the brief accessibility may have been caused by a network-level misconfiguration. A source familiar with the matter told TechCrunch that a similar situation occurred in September 2022.

At that time, internet service providers accidentally unblocked restricted sites, including TikTok, while applying technical updates.

Since the ban, TikTok has remained officially inaccessible in India. In its absence, other short-video platforms such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Indian apps like Moj and Josh have gained popularity. These platforms have filled the gap in the fast-growing creator economy.

India banned TikTok and several other Chinese apps in June 2020, citing national security concerns during heightened border tensions with China. The move affected millions of creators who had relied on TikTok for their content and audience.

Despite regular rumors about a possible return, TikTok has not been able to negotiate a comeback. For now, the ban continues, and the app remains unavailable to Indian users.
