TikTok Could Soon Let Users Send Money Through DMs

TikTok Could Soon Let Users Send Money Through DMs

TikTok is reportedly exploring a new peer-to-peer payment feature. The service could allow users to send money through direct messages.

The planned feature would resemble payment tools offered by other digital platforms. X has also recently introduced its own money transfer service. According to Bloomberg, the proposed TikTok feature would use TikTok Pay. The payment service is already available in parts of Southeast Asia.

TikTok Pay currently supports purchases through TikTok Shop. The company could potentially expand its payment system to direct money transfers. References to the feature were reportedly found in hidden code. The code appeared inside the current TikTok app for iPhone users in the United States.

The discovered code suggests a simple payment process. Recipients could reportedly tap an option to accept incoming payments. Senders could also attach a message to the transaction. This would make the proposed system similar to services such as Venmo.

However, TikTok has not confirmed that the feature is being tested. The company told Bloomberg that it is not currently testing the payment system.

This indicates that the feature could still be in an early development stage. There is also no confirmed launch date for the service. It remains unclear whether TikTok will eventually introduce the feature to users. The company could also limit its availability to selected markets.

TikTok did not immediately respond to TechCrunchโ€™s request for comment. The company has therefore provided limited public information about the reported plans.

The possible payment feature would represent another expansion into financial services. TikTok has already taken several steps beyond its traditional social media business.

Earlier this year, Reuters reported that TikTok applied for approval in Brazil. The application sought permission to operate as a financial technology company.

The proposed services reportedly included lending and payment products. This shows the companyโ€™s growing interest in financial services.

TikTok has also expanded its platform with several additional features. These include TikTok Shop, search tools and a local discovery map. The platform also offers games and hotel booking services in some markets. These additions have broadened TikTokโ€™s role beyond short-form video content.

A peer-to-peer payment system could strengthen that strategy. It could allow users to handle financial transactions without leaving the platform.

Such a move could also increase competition with established payment services. Venmo and Zelle are among the platforms that already support money transfers.

TikTok would not be the only social network entering this space. X, formerly known as Twitter, has also expanded into financial services.

X recently launched X Money for transferring funds between users. The development reflects a wider trend among social platforms.

Companies are increasingly adding financial tools to their digital ecosystems. These services can create new ways to keep users within their platforms.

For TikTok, direct payments could become another part of its growing ecosystem. However, the company has not confirmed whether the reported feature will launch.

Until an official announcement is made, details about the payment system remain uncertain. Its availability, launch date and final features have yet to be determined.

The reported development nevertheless signals TikTokโ€™s continued expansion beyond social media. Financial services could become an increasingly important part of its future strategy.
