Veteran actor Manoj Kumar passes away at 87 in Mumbai

Legendary Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, best known for his patriotic roles in classics like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, has died at the age of 87 in Mumbai.

He passed away early Friday morning at 3:30 am due to heart complications, with liver cirrhosis cited as a secondary cause, according to a statement from Kokilaben Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, calling Kumar a “national icon” whose passion for patriotism deeply influenced Indian cinema. “His films sparked national pride and will continue to inspire generations,” the PM wrote.

Born in Abbottabad in 1937, Kumar began his film journey in 1957 and became a household name with Shaheed and Gumnaam. He later turned director, earning acclaim for Shor and winning the Filmfare Award for Best Director in 1975 for Roti Kapada Aur Makaan.

Kumar was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His passing marks the end of an era, with tributes flooding in from across the country.
