A legal complaint has been filed against former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram for allegedly promoting a sports betting and gambling platform. The application was submitted to the Cyber Crime Wing of the FIA, now known as the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), in Lahore.
According to the complaint by Muhammad Fiaz, Wasim Akram signed up as a brand ambassador for an Indian betting company linked to the platform called Baji.
A poster and a video circulating on social media reportedly show Akram endorsing the platform, urging people to join for an “exciting experience.”
The complainant stated that Wasim Akram, by associating with the platform, was promoting gambling in Pakistan, which is strictly prohibited under law. The application seeks strict action against him under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) of 2016.
While Wasim Akram has not yet responded to the complaint, this case highlights the growing scrutiny of influencers and celebrities promoting betting and gambling platforms in Pakistan. Authorities have expressed concern over the financial losses suffered by users misled into using these platforms.
The complaint comes shortly after popular YouTuber Saad ur Rehman, known as Ducky Bhai, was arrested in Lahore. NCCIA registered a case against him for promoting online gambling apps such as Binomo, 1xBet, Bet365, and B9 Game. He is currently in custody on a two-day physical remand.
According to the FIR, Ducky Bhai faces multiple charges under PECA, including electronic forgery, electronic fraud, spamming, and spoofing, as well as charges under the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Authorities continue to investigate other internet personalities allegedly promoting gambling platforms for financial gain.
This complaint against Wasim Akram signals increased regulatory action against celebrities endorsing prohibited gambling services in Pakistan.
