In an unbelievable twist of fate, a Lexington woman struck gold after using numbers from a fortune cookie to buy a Powerball ticket — and ended up winning $50,000. Kathy Bailey, who had just enjoyed a Chinese meal with her family, decided to try her luck using the cookie’s numbers.
While browsing the Kentucky Lottery website, Bailey also placed a spontaneous $5 wager on the Golden Snake Triple Play. Just seconds later, she was staring at a $50,000 win flashing on her screen — odds of which are one in two million, according to lottery officials.

Startled and thrilled, she called her husband over to double-check. “You might want to take a look at this,” she told him. He was equally shocked and joked, “What have you done now?”
With taxes deducted, Bailey walked away with $36,000. Already debt-free and preparing for her husband’s retirement, she says the money is a sweet bonus to their savings. “Not bad for a $5 spin,” she laughed as she collected her prize.
