The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) announced a substantial 172 percent hike in natural gas prices for non-protected residential consumers. According to a notification issued by Ogra, these revised rates will go into effect starting November 1, 2023.
Under the new pricing structure, protected consumers in a special category will be charged a fixed rate of Rs400 per MMBtu. Meanwhile, non-protected consumers will face a fixed charge of Rs1,000 for gas consumption up to 1.5 hm3, and this charge increases to Rs2,000 if their consumption exceeds this threshold.

Those eligible for the protected category include domestic consumers whose average gas consumption during the last four winter months (from November to February) remains at or below 0.9 hm3.
For consumers falling within the 0.9 to 25 hm3 usage range, Ogra has introduced a Rs100 per MMBtu increase, setting the new rate at Rs300 per MMBtu.
Likewise, customers consuming between 25 hm3 and 60 hm3 in a month will now pay Rs600 per MMBtu, up from the previous rate of Rs300.
Consumers with monthly gas usage of up to 100 hm3 will face a per MMBtu price of Rs1,000, reflecting an increase of Rs600 as per Ogra’s notification.
For those who utilize up to 150 hm3 of gas monthly, Ogra has implemented a price increase of Rs600 per MMBtu, resulting in a new rate of Rs1,200 per MMBtu. The rate has been revised up by Rs800 to Rs1,600 per MMBtu for consumers using 200 hm3 of gas each month.
Furthermore, for those in the highest consumption bracket, utilizing up to 400 hm3 of gas monthly, the per MMBtu price has been raised to Rs4,000 from the previous rate of Rs3,100 per MMBtu, representing a significant increase.
