New Delhi Experiences Heavy Rain, Ending The Heatwave

Today, heavy rainfall in parts of New Delhi provided relief from the scorching heat and humid conditions. Areas such as Munirka and Sarita Vihar experienced significant showers, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rain throughout the day.

According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain, and in some places heavy rain, along with wind speeds of 20-40 km/h, are expected over Delhi and nearby regions. This weather pattern follows a period of intense heatwave conditions across Delhi and northern India, which have been linked to several reported deaths.

New Delhi had faced nine heatwave days in June, contrasting sharply with no such days in 2023 and 2022. Earlier forecasts from the IMD had predicted maximum and minimum temperatures of approximately 38 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius for the day.

Looking ahead, there is anticipation that the monsoon will reach Delhi by the end of the week, as per a forecast by Skymet Weather Services. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet indicated that the monsoon’s arrival in Delhi is likely around June 29 or 30.
