A massive blaze broke out on Thursday at a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone. The incident triggered a large-scale emergency operation by fire and rescue officials.
The Karachi factory fire has been classified as a third-degree fire, the most severe level, by the fire brigade. At least 16 fire tenders and two water bowsers are currently on the scene, working to control the flames.
The fire started in one industrial unit and quickly spread to nearby factories. Rescue teams revealed that one of the neighbouring units stores gas cylinders, which increases the risk of a potential explosion.
Seven injured workers have been pulled from the burning building so far. Officials say sections of the five-storey factory’s roof have collapsed due to intense heat and pressure from the fire.
Emergency services have warned that additional water resources are urgently needed. Despite several hours of effort, the fire continues to burn uncontrollably. Authorities caution that if not brought under control soon, the situation could worsen and cause more damage.
Chairman of the Export Processing Zone, A.D Khawaja, visited the site. He said the fire was reported around 10:30 AM. Initially, one fire tender was dispatched, but more were called in as the situation escalated.
Khawaja added that the factory was used to recycle old clothes. He confirmed contact with the Karachi Commissioner and Rescue 1122 to coordinate efforts in containing the fire and protecting nearby industrial units.
This is the second major industrial fire in Karachi in recent weeks, sparking renewed concerns over fire safety in key economic zones of the city.
Authorities have assured that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
