US State Department on PTI Founder's Prison Sentence

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller refrained from commenting on the prison sentence of PTI founder, stating in a media briefing that they have been monitoring the cases against the former prime minister.

Miller emphasized that the prosecution is a legal matter, and it is ultimately for Pakistan’s courts to decide. He reiterated the US’s consistent call for the respect of democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law in Pakistan and emphasized the desire to see a free, fair, and open democratic process.

Miller highlighted that the US does not take a position on internal Pakistani matters or candidates for office, expressing the hope for a transparent electoral process in the coming week to 10 days.
