Open Letter Addressed To Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The Southasia Peace Action Network (Sapan) has called upon Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been elected for the third time, to convene a meeting of heads of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) nations, including Pakistan, “to establish a roadmap for peace and improved relations”.

In a letter addressed to Modi, Sapan, a collective of individuals and various organizations dedicated to peace in South Asia, expressed disappointment that Pakistan was not invited, among other countries, to celebrate the new government and parliament during the oath-taking ceremony.

“We regret the absence of an invitation to Pakistan. In the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – the world is one family – we hope you will reconsider your stance and extend a hand of friendship to all SAARC countries, including Pakistan,” the letter stated.

Highlighting the shared history of colonial exploitation and the divisive policies of partition, the letter emphasized that it was within “our capability to mend divisions, demonstrating that our ancient cultures and traditions are stronger than any arsenal”.

“The absence of dialogue between India and Pakistan risks empowering those who benefit from keeping our nations divided. It also obstructs South Asia’s ability to focus on mutual development and prosperity.

“History demonstrates the importance of dialogue. If former Indian Prime Minister, the late Shri Rajiv Gandhi, had not attended the 1988 SAARC summit in Islamabad, many crucial issues between India and Pakistan would have remained unresolved during the Cold War. Similarly, the aftermath of the Kargil War and the events of 9/11 required dialogue.

“Sapan stressed the importance of enhancing the quality of life for all people in the region, improving performance in every sector, and liberating people from the grip of hunger, disease, unemployment, and ethnic and religious conflicts.

It emphasized that India’s 2024 electoral mandate, which brought in a consensus government, provided an opportunity for South Asia and SAARC to also be governed by consensus. “Let us seize this moment to foster an inclusive and collaborative future for our region,” it asserted.

Sapan added that there were many other groups in the region that fully supported all South Asian governments in taking steps in this direction.
