Andrej Karpathy, an artificial intelligence researcher and a founding member of OpenAI, announced his departure from the Microsoft-backed company on Monday in a post on the social media platform X.
His departure marks a significant development for OpenAI, one of the leading labs in the race to advance artificial intelligence capabilities.
In his post on Tuesday, Karpathy stated, “My immediate plan is to work on my personal projects and see what happens.”

Karpathy, who rejoined OpenAI last year for his second stint, previously served as a senior director for AI at Tesla, where he played a pivotal role in developing the electric car maker’s artificial intelligence and driver assistance technology.
Having studied under prominent Stanford AI scientist Fei-Fei Li, Karpathy initially joined OpenAI as one of its earliest team members before transitioning to Tesla. Recently, he discussed the concept of large language models, such as GPT, acting as a novel form of computer operating system.
