At least 15 newborn babies have died after a fire broke out at a nursery in PIMS Hospital Islamabad. Hospital authorities confirmed the deaths following the incident.
According to rescue officials, firefighters brought the blaze under control. Cooling operations continued after the fire was extinguished.
Initial information suggested that an air-conditioner compressor explosion may have triggered the fire.
However, authorities have formed an inquiry committee to determine the exact cause.
16 Babies Were Inside Nursery
According to the hospital administration, 16 newborn babies were inside the nursery when the fire started. A female doctor reportedly managed to rescue one baby from the affected area.
However, 15 newborns could not be saved. Officials said several victims suffered severe burn injuries during the incident.
The fire reportedly broke out on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health ward. Rescue and fire brigade teams were dispatched after authorities received information about the emergency.
Six fire engines participated in the operation. Four ambulances were also deployed to support rescue and emergency efforts.
Inquiry Launched Into PIMS Hospital Fire
Authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly incident.
An inquiry committee has been formed under the supervision of an Additional Deputy Commissioner.
The committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine its cause. The investigation is also expected to examine whether any negligence contributed to the tragedy.
Prime Minister Orders Investigation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep grief over the deaths at PIMS Hospital. He took notice of the incident and directed authorities to conduct an immediate investigation.
The prime minister called for a detailed review of the circumstances behind the fire. He also directed officials to identify those responsible if negligence or wrongdoing is established.
Shehbaz Sharif said strict action should be taken against anyone found responsible.
He also expressed condolences to the families of the newborn babies. The prime minister said the loss of children was an irreparable tragedy.
He expressed solidarity with the grieving parents and families.
KP Governor Expresses Grief
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also expressed sorrow over the incident. He described the deaths of the newborn babies as deeply heartbreaking.
The governor extended condolences and sympathy to the affected parents and their families. The PIMS Hospital fire has prompted an official investigation as authorities examine how the incident occurred.
