KARACHI: Another tragic road accident has claimed the life of a young child in Karachi, raising fresh concerns about traffic safety and reckless driving in residential areas.
The incident took place in Ghareeb Nawaz Colony, Manghopir, within the limits of Manghopir police station. A fast-moving water tanker struck a minor child, causing fatal injuries. The child died on the spot due to the impact.
Police officials said the accident occurred when the water tanker was returning after supplying water in the area. During this process, the vehicle was reportedly being reversed on a narrow street. In the process, it ran over the child.
The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital using an Edhi ambulance. Hospital authorities confirmed the identity of the deceased as seven-year-old Arif, son of Ghulam Abbas. Legal formalities were completed at the hospital.
Following the incident, Manghopir police acted promptly. They seized the water tanker involved in the accident. The driver was also arrested at the scene. Police identified the driver as Wazir Muhammad, son of Qadroon Shah. Further investigation is currently underway.
Speaking at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, the victim’s father, Ghulam Abbas, shared details about his family. He said his wife passed away three years ago. Arif was the youngest of his two sons. He described his loss as unbearable.
According to the father, the water tanker had already completed water delivery in the street. He alleged that while reversing, the driver failed to notice the child. He further claimed that the driver was wearing earphones. Because of this, he could not hear people shouting to stop the vehicle.
The grieving father accused tanker operators of prioritizing profit over safety. He said reckless driving by tanker drivers has become a serious threat to children. He demanded strict punishment for the arrested driver.
He also called for action against the owners of the water tanker. He urged authorities to ensure accountability at all levels. He stressed that such accidents could be prevented with better enforcement.
Residents of the area echoed similar concerns. They said speeding heavy vehicles in narrow streets pose constant danger. They demanded stricter traffic controls in residential neighborhoods.
