Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York to lead Iran’s diplomatic delegation at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The annual UN gathering brings together world leaders, foreign ministers, and senior officials to discuss major international issues. This year’s session is taking place amid ongoing global tensions and diplomatic challenges.
Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday evening local time. He was welcomed at John F. Kennedy International Airport by Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s permanent representative and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations.
Before reaching New York, Araghchi made a short stop in Doha. During his visit, he held discussions with Qatari officials about regional developments and international matters.
Iranian officials said Araghchi is expected to participate in meetings with foreign ministers and other senior officials during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.
After arriving in New York, Abbas Araghchi also held a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The discussion reportedly focused on the General Assembly agenda and issues related to international peace and security.
The visit comes at a sensitive time in relations between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Recent developments have increased diplomatic attention on Tehran’s position at the international level.
Iranian officials said Araghchi’s delegation will focus on defending what Iran describes as its national interests and the concerns of its people during the UN meetings.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also scheduled to travel to New York. He is expected to address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, September 23, and hold meetings with other world leaders.
The 81st UN General Assembly high-level debate is being held from September 22 to September 26. An additional session is scheduled for September 28.
This year’s gathering is being conducted under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” Leaders are expected to discuss global security, development, climate issues, and international cooperation.
Araghchi’s participation is expected to highlight Iran’s diplomatic positions during discussions on regional security and international relations.
