Federal minister Ahsan Iqbal clarified on Saturday in London that the government has no intention of ending provincial autonomy. Speaking to media at the Pakistan High Commission, he emphasized that the recent constitutional amendments aim to address pressing issues rather than limit provincial powers.
βThere are no intentions to abrogate provincial autonomy, but some problems need to be resolved soon,β said Ahsan Iqbal. He highlighted that the amendments are designed to benefit the country and the nation, rather than any single political party.
The PML-N leader expressed optimism about building a national consensus on the matter. βI believe we will succeed in creating a consensus soon,β he said. Ahsan Iqbal stressed that the constitutional amendment, including the 27th Amendment approved by the federal cabinet, is a step toward strengthening the countryβs governance framework.
The 27th Constitutional Amendment introduces significant measures, including the creation of a Constitutional Court to deal exclusively with constitutional matters. It also proposes a new defence post to streamline decision-making in security-related issues.
Praising military leadership, Ahsan Iqbal acknowledged Field Marshal Asim Munirβs contributions. βHe has demonstrated valiant leadership and gained worldwide recognition for his capabilities. The world is now seeing Pakistan in a new light,β he added.
He also highlighted the role of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in supporting the armed forces. βThe Prime Minister, demonstrating insight, has extended political backing to the armed forces,β said the minister.
The federal cabinetβs approval of the 27th Amendment marks a key milestone in Pakistanβs governance reforms. Officials say the changes are intended to strengthen constitutional processes and ensure efficient resolution of national and provincial matters.
Ahsan Iqbal reiterated that the governmentβs focus remains on national unity and constitutional stability. Citizens are being assured that provincial autonomy will remain intact while addressing challenges that require urgent attention.
