Ambreen Jan has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), making her the first woman to hold this prestigious position.
Her appointment was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A formal notification has been issued, confirming Ambreen Jan’s role at the helm of the media regulatory body.
Ambreen Jan’s selection marks a historic milestone for women in Pakistan’s media and administrative sectors. Experts say her appointment is expected to increase female representation within PEMRA and open a new chapter in media regulation.
Last month, the former Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was unanimously chosen as PEMRA’s chairperson. Ambreen Jan, a Grade-22 officer, brings decades of administrative and policy experience to the position. She previously served as Secretary of Information, playing a key role in government-media relations.
The selection process involved a high-level parliamentary committee chaired by Shehbaz Babar. Ambreen Jan was among five candidates shortlisted for the post. Other contenders included Brigadier (retd) Anwar Ahmed, Mateen Haider, Irfan Ashraf, and Dr Hamid Khan. Following careful deliberations, the committee unanimously approved Ambreen Jan’s nomination.
After receiving the committee’s recommendation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed her appointment, highlighting her expertise and experience as key factors for the decision.
Analysts say Ambreen Jan’s leadership is likely to bring a fresh perspective to PEMRA’s operations. She is expected to focus on enhancing transparency, strengthening media standards, and encouraging fair representation across Pakistan’s electronic media sector.
Ambreen Jan’s appointment is being widely welcomed as a progressive step. It not only reinforces women’s role in leadership positions but also signals a commitment to modernizing and reforming media regulations in Pakistan.
