Pakistan is expected to observe two public holidays later this month on the occasion of Ashura, although the final dates will depend on the sighting of the Muharram moon.
According to early astronomical estimates, the 9th and 10th of Muharram are likely to fall on June 25 and June 26. These dates mark Ashura, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
Every year, the federal government announces nationwide public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. During these days, government offices, private businesses, banks, and educational institutions remain closed to observe the occasion.
The expected Ashura Holidays have already drawn public attention, as many people are waiting for the official confirmation. However, authorities have clarified that the dates cannot be finalized until the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announces the sighting of the Muharram moon.
Experts and astronomical bodies have shared their preliminary forecasts regarding the start of the new Islamic year. A spokesperson for Suparco stated that the chances of sighting the Muharram moon on June 15 are very low. Based on current calculations, Zilhaj 1447 AH is expected to complete 30 days.
If this prediction proves correct, the first day of Muharram will likely fall on June 17. As a result, the 10th of Muharram, which marks Ashura, is expected to be observed on June 26.
The federal government is expected to issue an official notification once the moon sighting is confirmed. Until then, the proposed dates remain subject to change.
Religious gatherings, processions, and security arrangements are usually planned well in advance of Ashura. Authorities across the country also begin preparations to ensure smooth observance of the event.
The anticipated Ashura Holidays are important for millions of Pakistanis who participate in religious activities during Muharram. Many families also use the holidays to attend commemorative events and community gatherings.

For now, citizens are advised to wait for the final announcement from the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Once the moon is sighted, the government will officially confirm the dates of the Ashura Holidays and issue the required notification nationwide.
