The protests quickly spread to cities like Pokhara, Itahari, and Biratnagar. Protest organizers identified participants as mainly Generation Z. They carried placards with slogans such as βUnban social mediaβ and βYouths against corruption.β
Authorities responded with curfews and deployed the army near key government buildings. The death toll rose, with some reports citing up to 19 killed and hundreds injured.
The United Nations and rights groups called for an independent investigation, citing concerns over excessive force. The Home Affairs Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, resigned amid mounting pressure over the violence.
