Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, daughter of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, launched a strong criticism of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Imran Khan. She accused the party of moral duplicity and character assassination.
In a post on X, she said there was “literally no level too low” for PTI supporters. Bakhtawar defended her own family, noting that her parents were lawfully married and visitation rights were formally determined by courts.
She contrasted this with Imran Khan’s actions, alleging that he forced a married woman with children to divorce and then remarried her without following Islamic law. “PTI should stop preaching and sit down,” she added. Her remarks highlight growing public scrutiny over forced divorce and nikah practices in political and personal controversies.
Legal Proceedings Over Marriage
The criticism comes amid a legal dispute concerning Imran Khan’s marriage to his third wife, Bushra Bibi. Cleric Mufti Mohammad Saeed testified that he solemnized the nikah while Bushra Bibi was still observing iddat, the waiting period required under Islamic law after divorce.
The testimony was submitted before a senior civil judge during proceedings against Khan. The case alleges that he violated both religious and legal norms by marrying during the iddat period. Under Islamic law, iddat is a roughly 130-day period during which a woman may not remarry, following a divorce or the death of her husband.
Imran Khan married Bushra Bibi in 2018, sparking widespread controversy. The situation has fueled debates over the legality and ethics of forced divorce and nikah, with critics questioning the former prime minister’s adherence to Islamic regulations.
Political and Social Impact
Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari’s statements have intensified the political discourse, highlighting concerns over misuse of personal and religious laws. Analysts say that allegations surrounding forced divorce and nikah may have long-term implications for Imran Khan’s public image and the PTI party’s moral credibility.
As legal proceedings continue, the case is expected to remain a focal point in both political and social discussions, raising questions about ethical conduct, religious compliance, and protection of women’s rights in Pakistan.
The controversy underscores the importance of following religious and legal procedures in marital matters, particularly for public figures under intense scrutiny.
