Bank Road's Underground Transformation Set for Grand Inauguration

The bustling Bank Road in Saddar’s commercial hub of Rawalpindi is ready to unveil its new look as Pakistan’s first underground cabling-based walking street on February 26. The prestigious event will have Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as the chief guest, along with notable figures such as Secretary of Defence Lt-Gen (retd) Muhammad Ali, MLC Director General Irfan Ahmed Malik, and various members of the National and Provincial Assembly.

The Rs1.2 billion project, stretching one kilometer from Murree Road to Police Station Road, is designed to ease congestion and beautify the area. Overhead electricity and telephone cables have been shifted underground, while a new sewage system, modern lighting, and footpaths have been installed. Spacious walkways, sitting benches, and food stalls now welcome shoppers in a more vibrant and organized space.

Four blocks of Bank Road have been made pedestrian-only zones, with heavy gates marking each section. Visitors will also enjoy the convenience of electric vehicles offering a free shuttle service, making it easier for them to explore the area. Evening crowds are expected to swell as Bank Road has already gained popularity for its pedestrian-friendly transformation.

Executive washrooms and a picturesque layout make Bank Road a pleasant attraction for families and visitors. The surrounding areas, including Haider Road, Kashmir Road, and Mall Road, are also undergoing similar underground cabling projects as part of a larger beautification initiative.

The entire Saddar area is set to benefit from this modernization project, with Rs4.38 billion allocated for future developments, including efforts to make intersections on Mall Road signal-free, easing traffic woes for residents and visitors alike.
