The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced extended Banking Hours across the country to facilitate taxpayers during the busy tax payment period. The decision was taken to provide relief to the public and ensure smooth collection of government duties and taxes.
According to the SBP, all commercial bank branches will remain open until 5:30 PM on May 29. The extended Banking Hours are expected to help customers complete tax-related transactions without facing long delays or overcrowding at bank branches.
The central bank said the move was made on the request of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Officials believe the extra hours will reduce last-minute pressure on banks and make the payment process easier for taxpayers across Pakistan.
For branches that normally operate on Saturdays, special schedules have also been announced. These branches will stay open on May 30 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Authorities said this step will help people who cannot visit banks during regular weekday timings.
The SBP also directed banks to continue operations until all special clearing activities are completed. This means branches will not close early if tax payments or other important transactions are still being processed.
In addition to physical branch operations, digital banking services have also been instructed to remain fully active during this period. Officials said online systems must continue functioning without interruption to support customers using electronic payment methods.
Internet banking, mobile banking applications, ATMs, and other digital services will stay operational to ensure uninterrupted access for taxpayers. Customers are being encouraged to use online banking channels where possible to avoid unnecessary rush at branches.
The extended Banking Hours are expected to provide significant convenience for businesses, traders, salaried individuals, and other taxpayers trying to meet payment deadlines before the end of the collection period.
Banking experts say tax collection periods usually lead to increased activity at branches, especially near deadlines. Long queues and delayed processing are common during such times, particularly in major cities.
The latest arrangements aim to improve customer service and speed up the handling of government payments. Banks are also expected to increase staff availability to manage the higher number of visitors during the extended working hours.
The Federal Board of Revenue regularly coordinates with the State Bank and commercial banks during major tax collection periods. Such measures are introduced to ensure smoother processing of payments and to prevent technical or operational disruptions.
