LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab government has approved March 12 to 14, 2027, for the next Basant festival in Lahore, allowing the traditional kite-flying celebrations to take place over three days.
The decision was approved by the provincial cabinet on October 20, 2026, following a proposal from Lahore Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz, according to media reports.
The revised schedule replaces an earlier plan to hold the festival from January 29 to February 7, 2027.
Under the announced arrangements, kite flying will be permitted only on designated festival days and in areas where the activity is allowed. Participants and manufacturers must comply with the district administration’s safety regulations.
Basant 2027 Dates and Festival Schedule
The Lahore district administration has set the following dates for Basant 2027:
- Friday, March 12, 2027: First day
- Saturday, March 13, 2027: Second day
- Sunday, March 14, 2027: Final day
The three-day schedule is intended to provide a defined period for the festival while keeping kite-flying activities under official supervision.
Permission will not extend to areas where kite flying is prohibited. Residents should check the latest official instructions for details about permitted locations and flying hours before participating.
Kite Flying Allowed Under Safety Regulations
The district administration has established rules governing kite flying and the materials used during Basant.
According to the administration’s published guidance, only approved kite sizes and cotton string are permitted. Chemical-coated, metallic and sharp kite strings, commonly known as manjha, are prohibited.
Other prohibited activities include aerial firing and fireworks. These restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of injuries and accidents during the celebrations.
Participants should follow the final notified conditions and avoid using prohibited materials, even during the approved festival dates.
Kite Manufacturers Must Register Digitally
The Lahore administration has also introduced a registration requirement for businesses involved in producing kites and kite-flying materials.
According to a report published by Dawn on September 4, 2026, registration for kite manufacturers was scheduled to begin on September 5, with production arrangements extending until March 14, 2027.
Manufacturers must complete the prescribed registration and approval process before operating under the scheme. The administration has said that only approved materials meeting the relevant standards can be used.
Registration for manufacturers is separate from the requirements that may apply to sellers, traders and other businesses involved in the supply chain.
Businesses should consult the official Basant portal for current registration instructions and any subsequent changes to the rules.
Which Kite Strings and Materials Are Allowed?
The announced safety framework restricts the materials that can be manufactured and used during Basant.
The key requirements include:
- Only kite sizes approved by the authorities are permitted.
- Cotton string must be used in accordance with the official rules.
- Chemical-coated, metallic and sharp kite strings are prohibited.
- Manufacturers must follow the required registration and approval process.
- Kite flying must remain within the permitted dates and locations.
Residents and businesses should not assume that all kite-flying materials are legal simply because Basant has been approved. The applicable rules and restrictions remain in force.
How to Check Official Basant 2027 Updates
Residents, kite manufacturers and other businesses can monitor the Lahore district administration’s official website for updates on the festival.
The administration’s Basant 2027 notice outlines safety requirements and prohibited activities. Further instructions may clarify permitted locations, operating hours and other arrangements as the event approaches.
Official information is available through the Lahore district administration’s Basant 2027 notice and its official notice board.
Manufacturers can also check the dedicated Basant 2027 portal for registration and regulatory information.
