Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker Program remains an important immigration pathway for qualified professionals living overseas.
Eligible applicants from Pakistan can also use this program to pursue Canada PR through the Express Entry system.
The Federal Skilled Worker Program, known as FSWP, targets people with skilled work experience.
Applicants must also meet requirements related to education and language ability. However, meeting the minimum FSWP requirements does not guarantee permanent residence.
Eligible candidates first enter the Express Entry pool. Their profiles are then ranked against other candidates.
Who Can Apply Through the Skilled Worker Program?
Applicants generally need at least one year of continuous paid skilled work experience. This experience must equal at least 1,560 hours and fall within the previous 10 years.
The work must also meet the required occupational classification and job duties.
Eligible experience must generally fall under NOC TEER categories 0, 1, 2 or 3. Applicants seeking Canada PR through this route must also meet language requirements.
They need to take an approved English or French language test. Federal Skilled Worker applicants must achieve at least Canadian Language Benchmark 7 in all four language abilities.
These abilities include reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Education Requirements for Foreign Applicants
Education is another important part of FSWP eligibility. Applicants who studied outside Canada generally need an Educational Credential Assessment.
The ECA determines how a foreign qualification compares with a Canadian educational credential.
Applicants should ensure their assessment meets current immigration requirements before creating an Express Entry profile.
Applicants Need at Least 67 Points
The Federal Skilled Worker Program has its own selection system based on 100 points.
Candidates must score at least 67 points to qualify under the program. The selection grid considers several factors.
These include age, education, work experience, language ability, arranged employment and adaptability.
This 67-point system should not be confused with the Comprehensive Ranking System.
The CRS is used after eligible candidates enter the Express Entry pool.
What Happens After FSWP Eligibility?
Meeting the 67-point threshold allows eligible candidates to proceed to the Express Entry stage.
Their profiles receive a CRS score based on various factors. Canada then conducts invitation rounds and invites selected candidates to apply for permanent residence.
Therefore, qualifying for the Federal Skilled Worker Program does not automatically result in an invitation.
