LAHORE: Another child narrowly escaped tragedy after falling into an uncovered manhole in the Manawan area of Lahore. Quick action by bystanders prevented a potential disaster.
According to reports, the child was walking near the BMC stop when he slipped into an open sewerage manhole. CCTV footage shows the moment of the accident, capturing the child’s fall. Witnesses immediately rushed to help and managed to pull the child out safely, without waiting for rescue teams.
Local residents expressed concern over the increasing number of uncovered manholes in the area. They said they had repeatedly informed the assistant commissioner of Wagah Town about the dangerous holes, but no action was taken. Residents warned that these open sewerage holes pose a serious threat to public safety.
The incident follows a recent tragedy near Bhatti Gate, where a woman and her young daughter lost their lives after falling into an open manhole. The previous incident prompted Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to order a thorough investigation. Five individuals were later arrested in connection with that tragedy.
Authorities have been urged to take immediate action to cover all open manholes across the city. Citizens emphasized the importance of proper maintenance and timely inspections to prevent further accidents.
Officials also stressed the need for awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks of uncovered sewerage holes. Residents said that proper street lighting and warning signs could help reduce the danger.
