Deadly Monsoon Spell: 79 Killed, 140 Injured Across Pakistan

Torrential monsoon rains have caused widespread damage and loss of life across Pakistan over the past 12 days. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 79 people have died in rain-related incidents from June 26 to July 7.

The highest number of fatalities was recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 29 deaths. Punjab followed with 24, Sindh reported 15, and Balochistan confirmed 11 casualties. In addition to the loss of life, 140 people were injured. These included 57 children, 48 men, and 35 women.

The NDMA also reported severe damage to homes. At least 66 houses were completely destroyed, while 123 were partially damaged due to flooding and heavy rains in various regions.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier warned of above-normal rainfall this monsoon season. The alert raised concerns about urban flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable districts.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab shared updated rainfall figures. The highest rainfall was recorded in Sheikhupura at 48mm, followed by 40mm in Lahore. Other cities like Gujranwala, Murree, and Faisalabad received between 4mm and 6mm of rain.

Lighter rainfall was also reported in Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, Attock, and other districts. PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that the ongoing monsoon spell is expected to continue until July 10.

He advised the public to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety instructions from local authorities. Emergency response teams have been deployed in high-risk areas, and district administrations have been asked to ensure the supply of relief goods, medicines, and water drainage equipment.

Authorities remain concerned about the impact of intense monsoon rains on older urban infrastructure, especially in cities like Lahore and Karachi, where drainage systems often fail to handle heavy downpours.
