Travel Hit By Fog As Authorities Close M-2, M-4 And Multiple Routes in Punjab

Dense fog caused major disruptions on Sunday as several routes closed across Punjab, halting intercity traffic and leaving commuters stranded.

Motorway authorities confirmed that the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway and the M-2 stretch from Lahore to Hiran Minar were temporarily shut due to extremely low visibility. Additionally, several routes closed on the M-4 between Khanewal and Multan, and the M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir, frustrating travelers and prompting warning signals along the highways.

Authorities Stress Safety

Officials emphasized that the closures were necessary to protect lives and property. โ€œDense fog can make driving extremely hazardous. Safety comes first,โ€ said a motorway official. Citizens were urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy fog and plan journeys during daylight hours, especially between 10 am and 6 pm. Drivers were also advised to follow official advisories closely before setting out.

Seasonal Fog Causes Disruptions

Dense fog is a regular occurrence in Punjab during winter, often blanketing low-lying areas and regions near rivers. This year, the fog has been particularly severe, reducing visibility drastically and bringing traffic to a near standstill. Experts say that fog forms when cool air near the ground traps moisture, creating suspended water droplets that impair vision.

Driving in such conditions can be extremely dangerous, increasing the risk of collisions and multi-vehicle pileups. Poor depth perception, slower reaction times, and hidden road hazards all contribute to the dangers.

Tips for Safe Travel

Authorities advised motorists to maintain extra distance between vehicles, use low-beam headlights or fog lights, and avoid unnecessary travel during dense fog. With several routes closed across the province, travelers were reminded that safety is more important than speed or convenience.

The winter season in Punjab will likely continue to bring fog-related challenges. Drivers are encouraged to monitor weather reports, plan trips carefully, and prioritize safety until conditions improve.

Dense fog may be common, but its impact on major motorways shows the need for caution and preparedness during peak winter months.
