DG ISPR Rejects Rumors About COAS Asim Munir Seeking Presidency

DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has dismissed rumors suggesting that Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir is seeking the presidency of Pakistan.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Economist, the military spokesperson called the claims “baseless and unfounded,” putting an end to growing speculation.

Following the statement, it is clear that Asim Munir is not pursuing any political role, including the presidency. The DG ISPR emphasized that such rumors only create unnecessary confusion and distract from national priorities.

When asked about Pakistan’s response to potential Indian military aggression, General Ahmed Sharif issued a strong warning.

He stated, “This time, we will begin from the East of India, and the response will start with a deep strike.” He further added that India must understand it could be targeted anywhere if it acts aggressively.

The clarification from the DG ISPR comes after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also refuted similar rumors last month. Naqvi labeled the claims harmful to national stability and part of a foreign-backed propaganda campaign targeting President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the Army Chief.

The minister reiterated that there is no discussion within the government about President Zardari stepping down. He stressed that the Chief of Army Staff has no political ambitions and remains committed to his professional responsibilities.

Naqvi also highlighted strong coordination between civilian and military leadership, warning that those spreading disinformation would fail in their attempts to create instability.

By addressing these rumors directly, the DG ISPR aims to maintain public trust and ensure focus on pressing national and security matters rather than political speculation.
