Donkey Population Soars by Over 109,000 in One Year

According to a recent report, the donkey population in the country increased by over 109,000 during the financial year 2023-24, reaching more than 6,047,000 compared to 5,938,000 the previous year, as per the census authority.

The number of mules also saw a rise of 3,000, bringing the total to 227,000, while the horse population grew by 1,000 to 383,000. Overall, the livestock population surged by 2,171,000, reaching a total of 59,711,000.

Buffaloes experienced a significant increase of 1,378,000, totaling 47,688,000, up from 46,310,000 the previous year. Sheep numbers went up by 388,000, surpassing 33,119,000.

Goat populations saw the largest growth, with an increase of 2,358,000, bringing the total to over 89,300,000 compared to 87,035,000 last year. Additionally, camels rose by 14,000 to exceed 1,177,000, up from 1,163,000, according to the Federal Census Authority.
