Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face higher costs from September 2026 as an existing relief measure nears its end.
The relief currently applies to electricity consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi. It is scheduled to expire by the end of August. According to reports, consumers have received quarterly adjustment relief of Rs1.99 per unit since June 2026.
The measure has provided consumers with a total financial benefit of more than Rs67.17 billion. However, the relief will complete its scheduled period this month. This could result in higher Power Bills from September.
New Quarterly Adjustment May Be Applied
After the current relief expires, another quarterly adjustment could take effect from next month.
The new adjustment would cover the April to June 2026 period. Electricity distribution companies have already submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
The companies have proposed placing an additional financial burden of more than Rs23 billion on electricity consumers. According to the proposal, electricity rates could increase by around Rs1 per unit.
However, the proposed increase has not yet received final approval. NEPRA will review the request and make the final decision regarding the quarterly adjustment.
Power Bills Could Increase From September
If NEPRA approves the proposed adjustment, consumers could see an increase in electricity costs from September.
The change would come immediately after the existing Rs1.99 per unit relief ends in August. As a result, Power Bills could become more expensive for households and other electricity consumers.
The actual impact will depend on the final adjustment approved by the regulator. Consumers have benefited from the current relief for three months, starting in June 2026.
Its expiry means the reduction currently reflected in electricity rates will no longer remain available.
At the same time, the proposed new adjustment could add around Rs1 per unit to electricity costs. This combination could increase the financial pressure on consumers from next month.
NEPRA to Make Final Decision
For now, the increase remains a proposal and has not been finalized.
NEPRA will decide whether the requested quarterly adjustment should be passed on to consumers. If approved, higher Power Bills could affect electricity consumers across Pakistan from September 2026.
